What clan is Dunbar? Clan Dunbar is headquartered in the port town of Dunbar. It has played an important role in Scottish history over the years. Gospatric, Earl of Northumbria received from Malcolm III of Scotland, the lands of Berwick-upon-Tweed as well as other parts of Lothian (the region containing Edinburgh) under him in around 1072. In 1128 Gospatric's son, Gospatric II, witnessed the foundation of Holyrood Abbey. In 1184 Patrick Dunbar married Ada, daughter of William The Lion, and was thus created Earl of Lothian and was justiciar (judge) of Scotland. Patrick Dunbar’s daughter received the lands of Home as part of her dowry. She made the claim in 1266 and this became established as the line which later became the Earls of Home in the 17th century. In 1248 Patrick Dunbar, who was Earl of Dunbar at that time, went to France to join King Louis IX on his sixth crusade but died during a siege by Muslim forces while they were trying to recapture Damietta in Egypt.
